About the Project

Wartime Newport: Artwork & Stories from the Home Front is an ongoing Newport Museum and Art Gallery project gathering historical information about the Number 11 Royal Ordnance Factory in Newport and related work by wartime artists Dame Laura Knight and Stanley Lewis from 1941-45.

The website includes previously unpublished photographs taken at the ROF to inform visitors of engineering procedures. Today these photographs provide us with a unique record of the ROF's work and social activities during the war.

From 2004 - 2005 the information contained on this site was complemented by an exhibition of wartime material from the collections at the Museum and Art Gallery.

A commemorative photobook, Wartime Newport: The Gun Factory
(ISBN 0-95619136-0-3) accompanied the 2004 exhibition.

Financial support from the Big Lottery Fund (formerly the National Lottery Community Fund) initially enabled this project, together with contributions from the Contemporary Art Society for Wales and the Imperial War Museum London.

From 2023 the Friends of Newport Museum and Art Gallery (FoNMAG) are generously supporting operational costs.
